Its finally here!
After nearly 2 decades Mountain Training is officially launching the new Coaching Award Scheme in the next few months. This development is incredibly exciting as it reflects a real break through for coaches all over the country who will now be able to access quality training opportunities.
Last week saw Manchester Climbing Centre play host to a star studded cast of 18 course providers including James McHaffie, Ian Dunn, Katherine Shirrmacher and many other hugely experienced and respected outdoor professionals. This team would become the first cohort to role our the Foundation and Development Coach Award Schemes later on this year and I felt incredibly privileged to be among such great company. Martin Chester, Plas Y Brenin’s Director of Training, has been driving the project forward in recent months and has really brought a sense of flair to the whole thing.
The word “Coaching” has really been the subject of discussion for many years within climbing along with its placing along with more historically traditional qualifications such as the MIA, MIC, ML and SPA. The truth here is that Martin and the team at Mountain Training have really worked hard to give these new qualifications a sense of harmony alongside what is already in place. They are designed to complement rather than conflict and I have no doubt will at every level improve the quality of coaching in the UK whether that be indoors or outdoors, competition or participation.
Everyone who experiences climbing has the right to enjoy it and be supported in reaching whatever their goals might be.
As one of the first members of the team to deliver these courses in the Country I am really looking forward to working with other like-minded professionals out there. Coach education is such an important stepping stone towards future achievements and something that has been missing within climbing for a long time.
In coming weeks I am looking forward to publishing some course dates for both the Development Coach and Foundation Coach levels. If you are in the Peak area and looking to find a course then please get in touch.
