This year is going to be a very exciting one for 16 talented young athletes from across Great Britain.
On December 9th 2012 over 160 hopeful young climbers descended on Liverpool’s Climbing Hangar to take part in the BMC’s first Youth Open for Bouldering. The event had a dual remit with the first objective being to serve as the first round of the new BMC Junior British Bouldering Championship series. The second aim was to act as a selection event for the new GB Junior Bouldering squad.
The selection process for the new international team involved a panel of experienced Coaches, Team Management members from Lead and Bouldering as well as a representative from the Mountaineering Council of Scotland. The role of the panel is to ensure a fair and equitable selection process takes place in adherence to the BMC’s selection policy. The panel for the weekends Bouldering Team selection comprised of myself (Team Manager/Coach), Lucinda Whittaker (Coach/Assistant Team Manager), Clive Phillips (Assistant Team Manager), Ian Dunn (Lead Team Manager), Robbie Phillips (MCofS) and John Ellison (Parents Rep Lead).
The panel did an amazing job and worked together to select a total of 16 athletes who will form the new team for 2013.
Since the selection of the squad myself and the management team have been working behind the scenes to plan the year ahead with team training events, selection opportunities and international competition plans.

Our first Team event will take place in March where both Lead and Bouldering Teams will come together to take part in our Inaugural Team Training. This event will serve as an introduction for some of the new team members as well as an opportunity for athletes to meet the new Bouldering Team Management. The weekend will also be a great opportunity for some specific training and assessment to be undertaken giving the coaches a solid base from which to plan the training for the athletes over the next 12 months.
This is a very exciting time for the GB Junior Bouldering team as the squad is really breaking new ground in terms of junior competition climbing.
